Abstract:
PURPOSE: To suppress injury and damage when a vehicle crashes by adjacently connecting panels and attaching a vehicle crash cushion to a barrier, and then, suspending the panels and energy absorbing elements higher above the ground surface by means of a mechanical linkage.
CONSTITUTION: A plurality of panels 12 is positioned to overlap one another along an expected colliding direction. Then a mechanical linkage orients the panels 12 in nearly parallel to a wall W. When the linkage orients the panels 12, the linkage couples the panels 12 to the panels 12 by suspending the panels 12 above the ground surface adjacently to the wall W so that the panels 12 may move toward the wall W when a vehicle crashes. A plurality of energy absorbing elements is positioned adjacently to the panels 12 between the panels 12 and wall W and at least part of the elements is suspended above the ground surface by means of the linkage. In addition, the movement of the panels 12 toward the wall W deforms the energy absorbing elements and retards the movement of the panels 12. Consequently, a vehicle crush cushion 10 which decelerates a vehicle moving toward the wall W of a roadway.
