This vehicle drive unit comprises an input shaft 10; an output shaft 12; a power dividing planetary gear set 20 which can divide power; the first M/G 56; and the second M/G 58. The input shaft 10 is connectable to a first ring gear 24. The output shaft 12 is connected to a first carrier 28. The first M/G 56 is connected to a first sun gear 22. The second M/G 58 is connectable to the output shaft 12 and the first ring gear 24, respectively, has a means for fixing the first ring gear 24 to a static part 52, and fixes the first ring gear 24 to the static part 52. By this, the first M/G 56 can deceleration-drive the output shaft 12 via the power dividing planetary gear set 20 in a state that an engine 1 is stopped, and the second M/G 58 can simultaneously drive the output shaft 12.
