To improve a response to a request for start during a braking action while curbing useless control of piston stop position.
The vehicle engine controller is equipped with an operational status judgment unit 101 which judges an operational status of an engine 1, and at least a combustion controller 102 which controls automatic stop and restart control of the engine 1. In the case where an engine stop condition has been established, when the operational status determination unit 101 determines that the engine is in an operational status in which an electrically-powered drive unit 36 is simultaneously used at restart, the combustion controller 102 automatically stops the engine 1 using a simplified stopping process where a given braking process was alleviated. After starting the simplified stopping control, if a given request for start is established when the engine 1 is rotating at a higher revolution speed than a predetermined revolution speed Nr1, the combustion controller 102 executes a scavenging process and thereafter executes a combustion restart.
