Abstract:
PURPOSE: To increase the reproducibility of combustion characteristics of a gas generating mixture by preparing the gas generating mixture by a material containing a metallic oxide and a metal azide selected from a group of alkali metal azide, alkaline earth metal azide, and aluminum azide.
CONSTITUTION: This vehicle occupant restraint assembly 12 stores a gas generating mixture 16 ignitable by an igniter 18 in a housing 14. When a collision occurs, the gas generated by combustion of the gas generating mixture 16 in the housing 14 is carried to a vehicle occupant restraint device 20 to inflate an air bag so as to restrain an occupant. In this case, a gas generating material is prepared from alkali metal azide, alkaline earth metal azide, or aluminum azide, and a metal oxide which is the gamma form of ferric oxide. Preferably, sodium azide is used as metal azide, and the gas generating mixture is adjusted to a scope of a weight ratio of gamma iron oxide to sodium azide of about 29:71 to 40:60.
