Abstract:
The present invention provides a torque converter for a vehicle, which is capable of achieving both improvement in engine startability and ensuring high power transmission efficiency. The torque converter (1) for the vehicle is disposed between an engine and a transmission, and is configured as follows: a pump wheel (2) connected to an output shaft of the engine and a turbine (3) connected to an input shaft of the transmission are arranged opposite to each other, a guide wheel (4) is arranged between the pump wheel (2) and the turbine (3), and a lock-up clutch (9) that is connected or disconnected in accordance with the operating oil pressure and directly connects the output shaft and the input shaft under prescribed conditions is provided; and oil as a torque transmitting medium fills theinside of the vehicle torque converter (1), the vehicle torque converter (1) is provided with an opening and closing mechanism (26), and the opening and closing mechanism (26) opens and closes a communication hole (10b) which is opened in a discharge path (B) which is one of the discharge paths (A, B) of the working oil when the lock-up clutch (9) is turned off according to the engine speed.
