To raise the heat of an exhaust gas cleaning catalyst early to an activation temperature when disposing a reactor for hydrogen separation and the exhaust gas cleaning catalyst in an exhaust passage.
The hydrogen generation system has the reactor 13 which separates hydrogenated fuel containing an organic hydride into hydrogen and dehydrogenated fuel, and an engine 1 to which at least one of the hydrogen and the dehydrogenated fuel is supplied. In the exhaust passage 11 of the engine 1, the exhaust gas cleaning catalyst 12 is disposed and the reactor 13 is also disposed downstream of the exhaust gas cleaning catalyst 12. For the exhaust passage 11, a bypass passage 52 bypassing the exhaust gas cleaning catalyst 12 and with a control valve 51 connected thereto can be provided upstream of the reactor 13.
