To prevent an electric power steering device form generating a steering auxiliary torque which is likely to give a sense of incongruity to a driver when a control device fails.
The target current setting means M9 calculates a target current IMS for driving a motor 27 of an electric power steering device based on steering torque TQ. An addition means 33 calculates a corrected target current IMS' from a current correction-amount ΔI calculated by an external control means Ul and the above target current IMS. A drive-prohibition judging means M12 sets an offset current ΔIOS, namely a threshold velue for a motor-actual current IM, which prohibits driving of the motor 27 smaller than the current correctionamount ΔI, and thus when the first control means Ul fails, and an inadequate current correction-amount ΔI is outputted, the driving of the motor 27 can be exactly prohibited, and the electric power steering device can be prevented from generating steering auxiliary torque to give a sense of incongruity to a driver.
