To perform cutting of a veneer from a material wood without lowering the productivity.
A veneer lathe is equipped with a spindle device 2 for holding both the edge faces of a material wood 1 under the state being rotatable about the axis center of the material wood 1 as fulcrums, backup rolls and a disc roll 24, each of which is provided so as to grip the outer peripheral surface of the material wood 1 and rotate the material wood 1 through its each rotation on its own axis, a plane stock 8, on which a knife 3, the cutting edge of which is directed to the material wood 1 are provided so as to advance towards the material wood 1 rotated by the respective rolls in order to continuously cut a veneer 7 off the outer peripheral part of the material wood 1, and a forward and backward movable nose bar 5, which locates both at the first position that the tip part of the nose bar opposes to the cutting edge of the knife 3 under the condition that a cutting edge interval H is left having the veneer 7 cut off the material wood 1 pinched therebetween and at the second position that the tip part of the nose bar 5 opposes to the cutting edge of the knife 3 just before the cutting edge of the knife 3. At the finish of the cutting the veneer 7, the terminal end part of the veneer 7 connecting with a ripping core is surely cut off with the knife 3.
