Abstract:

To provide a pharmaceutical composition containing a venlafaxine derivative free of the harmful effects such as hypertension and a headache, which racemic venlafaxine [chemical name: (±)-1-[2-(dimethylamino)-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]cyclohexanol], a nontricyclic antidepressant is known to have, along with its advantages.

The pharmaceutical composition includes a (-)-venlafaxine derivative not containing a (+) stereoisomer substantially, or pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier or excipient. The (-)-venlafaxine derivative is preferably selected from the group consisting of (-)-O-desmethylvenlafaxine, (-)-N-desmethylvenlafaxine, (-)-N, O-didesmethylvenlafaxine and (-)N,N-didesmethylvenlafaxine.
