To provide a vertical axis windmill which has an excessive rotation suppression mechanism which is applicable to a vertical axis windmill having an arbitrary-shaped main blade, which is highly durable, which has a simple structure, and in which the windmill rotation frequency is suppressed to a sufficiently lower state than the rated rotation frequency (maximum rotation frequency) in a strong wind state.SOLUTION: A vertical axis windmill includes: a base part having a power generation part; a rotation part rotating around a vertical axis with respect to the base part; and a plurality of windmill blades 10 (main blade 12) connected to the rotation part via an arm 20, and rotating around the vertical axis. The arm 20 has a movable arm 23 for excessive rotation suppression rotatable around the axis of a rotation axis 24 which connects the rotation part and the windmill blades 10 (main blade 12). At the movable arm 23, an excessive rotation suppression derivative 30 (weight 32) is provided which tilts the movable arm 23 around the rotation axis by the action of a centrifugal force generating at the rotation of the windmill, and which returns the movable arm 23 to the initial state when the windmill rotation stops.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 8
