To provide a vertical baking furnace, which can give sufficient heat to raw materials for baking without increasing the height of the furnace even if treatment capacity is increased.

The vertical baking furnace includes a preliminary heating cylinder 12 forming a preliminary heating space above a hearth 11 and a baking cylinder 13 forming a baking space under the hearth 11. The preliminary heating space is formed in a space in the preliminary heating cylinder 12 which extends upward from the outer peripheral edge of the hearth having a drop opening 11A positioned lower than a furnace rid. The baking space is formed in a space in the baking cylinder 13 extending downward from the peripheral edge of the drop opening 11A of the hearth 11. On the furnace rid 14, a heating device 15 for jetting a burning gas or a high temperature gas to the preliminary heating space is provided. In the baking cylinder 13, at positions in the middle in the height direction, barriers 13A extending from the inside of the baking cylinder 13 toward radial direction are provided in a plurality of positions in a circumferential direction. Also, a sub heater 20 jetting the combustion gas or the high temperature gas to the space formed directly below the barriers 13A is provided at the peripheral wall of the baking cylinder 13.
