In a vertical mill in which between a pulverizing table 2 and a roller 3, raw material is pulverized, a timing belt 44 is stretched between a large diameter pulley 42 rotated around a support axis 14 together with an oscillating block 13 freely turnably supporting the roller 3 and a small diameter pulley 43 provided on a rotation angle detecting sensor 41 to detect the rotation of the small diameter pulley 43 by the sensor 41. Based on the detection signal, the driving of a hydraulic cylinder 18 is controlled to adjust a clearance between the pulverizing table 2 and the roller 3. Since the rotation of the oscillating block 13 is amplified and transmitted to the small diameter pulley 43, the rotation angle of the oscillating block 13 is accurately detected.
