A steel pipe pile 1 having joint members 3, 4 is inserted in an excavation hole 15 and supported while the head remains protruding over the ground surface. For this pile (lower pile member 1b), a guide jig 7 furnished with a pair of upright guide pieces 9, 9 is placed on the ground in the condition that loose fit recess 11 and small diametric groove 13 surround the joint members 3, 4, and an upper pile 1a is hung down. The joint members 3, 4 are inserted in the grooves 13, 13, and the upper pile 1a is joined with the lower pile 1b.
