To provide a vibration damping device that can selectively connect a pendulum vibration damping mechanism to rotating shafts, and also can prevent or inhibit the deterioration of vibration control performance.
The vibration damping device 1 includes: a preliminary inertia mass body 13 for damping, by inertia force, torsional vibration generated in rotating bodies 4 and 5 rotatable by receiving a torque; and an elastic vibration reduction mechanism 22 for reducing torsional vibration by elastic force. The damping device is provided with: a pendulum vibration damping mechanism 9 housed in a housing chamber 29 provided at a position away from the rotating centers of the rotating bodies 4 and 5, and provided with a secondary inertia mass bodies 10 and 30 for damping torsional vibration by reciprocation along a rolling surface 31 formed on an inner wall surface of the housing chamber 29 and in a circumferential direction of the rotating bodies 4 and 5 in response to the torsional vibration; a clutch mechanism 8 for selectively connecting the pendulum vibration damping mechanism 9 to the rotating bodies 4 and 5; and an axis deviation prevention mechanism 12 for keeping the rotation axis line of the pendulum vibration damping mechanism 9 on the rotation axis lines of the rotating bodies 4 and 5.
