A washing machine has a water receiving tub 3 incorporating a combination washing and dewatering tub 5 driven to rotate by a motor 7a and an outer casing 1 suspending and supporting the water receiving tub 3. The washing machine includes: an elastic post mounted on the water receiving tub 3 to be vertical to the outer surface thereof; a strain gauge stuck to the elastic post; drum contact detecting means 51a, 51b to which a signal of the strain gauge depending on bending of the elastic post is input to detect a drum contact danger region of the water receiving tub 3 in a dewatering process; and a motor control means 53 for rotating or stopping the motor 7a on the basis of detection results of the drum contact detecting means 51a, 51b.
