Electric charge corresponding to an optical image of the field is periodically read from the entire light receiving surface of an image sensor 16. YUV data based on the electric charge read from the image sensor 16 are written in an SDRAM 34. A through image based on the YUV data stored in the SDRAM 34 is displayed on the LCD 40. When a shutter button 44 is operated, the brightness of the field is discriminated, and when it is sufficiently bright, a specifically set state that reads the electric charge from the central area of the light receiving surface of the image sensor 16 and inhibits writing the YUV data to the SDRAM 34 is validated. Focus is adjusted on the basis of the electric charge read from the image sensor 16 after validating the specifically set state. When focus adjustment is completed, the specifically set state is released.
