To provide a video display device which always prompt external video output devices to output video data in a video display format suitable for signal processing on the video display device side when a plurality of external video output devices are interconnected to perform processing of combining video data inputted from the individual external video output devices.

When a video from an external video output device is taken as an auxiliary video (slave picture) in, for example, picture-in-picture display, such processing is performed that control information in a video display format which gives a low resolution image out of a plurality of sets of control information stored in a read only memory 172 is preferentially read out and transmitted to the external video output device. A control circuit is provided which performs such processing that control information in a video display format which gives a high resolution image out of the plurality of sets of control information stored in the read only memory 172 is preferentially read out and transmitted to the external video output device in the other cases.
