An image signal 100 obtained with a camera section 2 is converted into a digital motion image signal 101 in an A/D conversion section 3, selected in a graphic generating section 10 and supplied to a monitor 11, and encoded in an encoding section 4 and recorded in a recording device 7. The digital motion image signal 101 is supplied to a subject detecting section 5, and a candidate of the subject (candidate subject) is detected by using edge detection. A parameter calculating section 6 calculates the zoom parameter of a zoom range, including the candidate subject and its zoom magnification rate from the image signal 104 of the candidate subject, and the camera section 2 executes zoom imaging of the zoom range at this zoom magnification rate, on the basis of the zoom parameter 106. Thus, a zoom image is displayed on the monitor 11.
