PURPOSE: To provide a video recording/reproducing device provided with a mode judging circuit which is more suitable for high integration conversion and is capable of efficiently and easily judging a video recording mode.

CONSTITUTION: The peak values of frequency difference signals fH and 3fH between pilot signals are detected by peak value detectors 30 and 40, compared by a comparator 50 and, after that, integrated by integration circuits (R1 and 1). The potential state of the signals are judged by a trigger level set in a Schmitt trigger circuit 60 and, as a result, a mode discriminating signal where a logical state is changed is outputted from the Schmitt trigger circuit 60. The potential state at an input end C is changed corresponding to the frequencies of the signals fH and 3fH, that is, the close-packing degree of a pulse string in output ends A and B.
