PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer useful as a scale inhibitor, etc., which effectively inhibits deposition of an alkaline earth metal sulfonate, etc., in a salt-forming water, by allowing it to compose of predetermined amounts of a plurality of specific monomer units.
CONSTITUTION: The subject polymer is composed of from 50 to 0.5 wt.%, preferably from 30 to 0.5 wt.% one or more monomer unit of formula I [wherein R1 and R2 are each H, a 1-4C alkyl, ammonium ion or an alkali (alkaline earth) metal ion], from 30 to 99.5 wt.%, preferably from 50 to 99.5 wt.% one or more monomer unit of formula II [wherein R3 is -(CH2)n- (wherein n is from 0 to 4); R4 is R1; and R5 is H, phenyl or a 1-4C alkyl] and from 0 to 69.5 wt.%, preferably from 0 to 40 wt.%, more preferably from 0 to 25 wt.% other monomer units chosen from the group consisting of ethylenically unsaturated compounds (e.g. acrylic acid).
