Abstract:
PURPOSE: To improve stability by reacting a dihydric phenol with phosgene and polymerizing the reaction product in the presence of a specific mol.wt. controlling agent.
CONSTITUTION: A new polycarbonate oligomer having, on an average 2-20 structural units of formula II (wherein A is 1-10C linear, branched, or cyclic alkylidene, aryl-substd. alkylene. arylene,-0-,-S-,-CO-,-SO-, or-SO2-; and R1 to R4 are each H, halogen, 1-4C alkyl, or aryl) and terminal groups comprising groups of formula III attached to phenol residues is prepd. by reacting a dihydric phenol with phosgene in the presence of an aq. alkaline soln. and polymerizing the reaction product in the presence of a mol.wt. controlling agent comprising vinylbenzoic acid of formula I in an amt. of 10-100mol (based on 100mol of the phenol) and a polymn. catalyst such as a tertiary amine or a quaternary ammonium salt.
