Abstract:
Vinylene cpds. of formula (I) and (II) are new. R = H, 1-15C alky or alkenyl (opt. substd. with one CN or CF3 gp. or at least one halogen, and opt. with 1 or more CH2 gps. replaced by O, S, 1,3-cyclobutylene, CO, COO, OCO or OCOO in such a way that O atoms are not directly linked together); A<1> = (a) trans-1,4-cyclohexylene (Cyc), opt. with 1 or more non-adjacent CH2 gps. replaced by O and/or S, and opt. substd. with CN or F; (b) 1,4-phenylene (Phe), opt. with 1 or 2 CH gps. replaced by N, and opt. substd. with CN or F; (c) 1,4-cyclohexenylene, 1,4-bicycloÄ2.2.2Üoctylene, piperidin-1,4-diyl, naphthalene-2,6-diyl or its decahydro- and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro- derivs.; Z<1> = -COO-, -OCO-, -CH2O-, -OCH2-, -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH-, -C IDENTICAL C- or a single bond. X = CN, OCN, NCS, Cl, or halogenated 1-7C alky or alkenyl, opt. with 1 or more CH2 gps. replaced by -O-; if R = alkyl, X is not F or CF3; L = H or F; m = 0 or 1. Also claimed is (i) a liq. crystalline (LC) medium based on a mixt . of polar cpds. with positive dielectric anisotropy, contg. one or more of the above new cpds.; (ii) electro-optical LC displays contg. a medium as in (i).
