Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a viscosity index improver which realizes excellent shear stability of a lubricant composition and low HTHS viscosity of the lubricant composition and is difficult to increase the low-temperature viscosity of the lubricant composition.SOLUTION: There is provided a viscosity index improver which contains a copolymer (A) containing a monomer (a) represented by the following formula (1) as an essential component monomer, wherein in the formula (1), Ris a residue obtained by removing one hydrogen atom from a hydrocarbon polymer containing an ethenyl ethylene group, an isobutylene group and/or a 1,2-butylene group as an essential constitutional unit, and the total ratio of the ethenyl ethylene group, the isobutylene group and the 1,2-butylene group is 50 mol% or more based on the total number of constitutional units derived from a monomer constituting the hydrocarbon polymer. [-X- is -O-, -O(AO)- or -NH-; p is 0 or 1.]
