Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a viscosity index improver excellent in viscosity index improving ability, and besides a lubricating oil composition containing it.
SOLUTION: The viscosity index improver contains a polymer (A) comprising as the constitutional monomer a monomer expressed by formula 1 (wherein, R1 is hydrogen or methyl group; X is a 2-4C alkylene group; n is an integer of 0 to 20, a mean of n(s) being 0 to 10, and X in a case when n is two or more, may be mutually the same or different; a part of (XO)n may be either a random addition or a block addition; and R2 is a 16-36C branched alkyl group) and satisfying a weight-average molecular weight of 5,000 to 50,000, a solubility parameter of 8.6 to 9.5, a beginning crystallization beginning temperature of -15°C or lower, and a steric hindrance factor of from more than 0 to less than 15; and the lubricating oil composition contains these.
