Abstract:
The invention provides a viscosity index improver excellent in shear stability and viscosity index improving ability. This viscosity index improver comprises a copolymer (A) that has a monomer (a) represented by general formula (1) as an essential structural monomer and a Z average molecular weight of 10,000-1,000,000. The general formula (1) is represented by CH2=C(R<1>)-COO(A-O)n-(CH2)p-CH(R<2>)-R<3>(1) wherein, R<1> is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, R<2> and R<3> are each a 1-16C straight chain alkyl group or a 3-34 C branched alkyl group, R<2> and R<3> may be identical or different, a number of continuous methylene groups in the branched alkyl group is less than or equal to 16, the total of carbon numbers of R<2>, R<3> and p CH2 >groups is 17-35, A is a 2-4C alkylene group, n is an integer of 0 or 1-20, and p is an integer of 0 or 1-15.
