PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a viscosity index improver having high viscosity-index improvement effect and being excellent in shear stability of a lubricant composition.SOLUTION: A viscosity index improver comprises copolymer (A) that comprises monomer (a) represented by general formula (1) and (meth)acrylic acid alkyl ester (b) with an alkyl group having 1-4 carbon atoms as essential constituent monomers.
