To provide a voltage-controlled oscillator which compensates the temperature characteristics of an SAW oscillator without increasing the power consumption.
The voltage-controlled oscillator is composed of: a voltage-controlled SAW oscillator circuit 1 using a SAW oscillator for oscillation; a temperature compensated oscillator circuit 2 oscillating on a fixed oscillation frequency irrespective of the temperature change; an intermittent timer 3 for switching on/off the power source of the temperature-compensated oscillator circuit 2 at specified time intervals; and a control voltage generating and holding circuit 4 which compares the oscillation frequency of the temperature-compensated oscillator circuit 2 with that of the voltage-controlled SAW oscillator circuit 1, when the power of the temperature-compensated oscillator circuit 2 is on, generates a control voltage to be inputted to a voltage-controlled SAW oscillator circuit 7, according to the comparison result, and holds the control voltage while the temperature-compensated oscillator circuit 2 is off.
