PURPOSE: To form high-quality images having the output density equal to a reference density signal with a small number of repetition of control even if a fluctuation in the characteristics of an electrophotographic process arises.
CONSTITUTION: This image density controller has a reference change rate conversion function memory section 302 which determines the change rate of the control input determined from the characteristics of the initial electrophotographic process, a change rate calculator 304 which calculates the change rate from the initial period of the characteristics of the present process from the control input and a change rate conversion function computing section 306 which computes the change rate conversion function optimum for the characteristics of the present process by using the change rate and the reference change rate conversion function. The change rate conversion function is updated to the change rate conversion function updated by a change rate conversion function updating section 216 and the change rate of the control input is calculated by a change rate calculating section 206 in accordance therewith, by which the density of the copied images is controlled. As a result, the high-quality images are formed at a high speed with the small number of repetition of the control.
