Abstract:
To provide an excellent water-absorbing material from, as the raw material, peat moss as an unused resource, and to provide a method for producing the water-absorbing material, etc.
This method for producing the water-absorbing material comprises the steps of graft polymerization of acrylonitrile to peat moss or humin as the residue resulted from extracting humic acid with an alkali from peak moss, in the presence of a catalyst comprising an aqueous solution of sodium hypochlorite and an aqueous solution of diammonium cerium nitrate and then hydrolysis of the resultant polymer in an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution.
