PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-base resin dispersion which forms a coating film having good physical properties by polymerizing an α,β-ethylenically unsatd. monomer in the presence of a water-base polyurethane resin dispersion which is obtd. by reacting a polyester polyol obtd. by the ring-opening addition polymn. of a lactone using dimethylolbutanoic acid as the initiator with a polyisocyanate compd. and a chain extender.
SOLUTION: This resin dispersion contains polymer particles having an average particle size of 0.01-2 μm and is obtd. by polymerizing an α,β- ethylenically unsatd. monomer (e.g. methyl methacrylate) in the presence of a water-base polyurethane resin dispersion having an acid value (in terms of solid) of 15-50 mgKOH/g in a wt. ratio of the polyurethane resin to the monomer of (100/400)-(100/5) by using a polymn. initiator. The water-base polyurethane resin is produced by reacting a polyol contg. a polyester polyol obtd. by the ring-opening addition polymn. of a lactone (e.g. ε-caprolactone) in the presence of dimethylolbutanoic acid as the initiator and an SnCl2, catalyst with a polyisocyanate compd. and a chain extender.
