To obtain a water-based coating composition having coating and film performances equal to or higher than those of conventional products and capable of readily preparing a water-based coating by adding an additive having functions as a binder.
This water-based coating composition is obtained by adding a solubilized material prepared by reducing the volume of an expanded polystyrene with a volume-reducing agent in a water-based coating consisting essentially of a synthetic resin emulsion. The volume-reducing agent preferably contains an insolubilizing agent having no solubilizing action on the expanded polystyrene. The amount of the added solubilized material is preferably 2.0-30.0 wt.% based on the solid matter of the synthetic resin emulsion and expressed in terms of the solid matter of the expanded polystyrene having the volume reduced with the volume-reducing agent.
