To provide a water-based coating composition which has good assured workability under wide humidity conditions, is excellent in stability, and can give coating films excellent in appearances and properties.
This resin composition comprises 50-90wt.% film-forming polymer (A) which is obtained by copolymerizing an ethylenic monomer having a 6-18 C saturated hydrocarbon group, an ethylenically unsaturated hydroxylic monomer, an acidic ethylenic monomer and other ethylenic monomers and 50-10wt.% hydroxylterminated polyester resin (B). Component B is grafted onto component A by a transesterification reaction, and at least part of the acidic groups of component A are neutralized with a base (C). The production process comprises performing the above transesterification at 130-200°C. The coating composition is prepared by mixing the above resin with a curing agent. The coating method is of two-coat-one-bake coating type and comprises using the above coating composition as the base coat.
