Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lessen distortion due to heat shock while enhancing oxidation resistance and abrasion resistance by providing an Al diffused permeation layer having specified most surface Al concentration and thickness on the surface by calorizing.
SOLUTION: The metallic water-cooled jacket for arc type electric furnace has a water-cooled jacket body 1 for inner wall of furnace provided, on the surface thereof, with an Al diffused permeation layer having most surface Al concentration of 10-50 wt.% and thickness of 20-800 μm by calorizing. The Al diffused permeation layer has most surface hardness of 35-1000 HV which is 3-7 times as high as that of the basic material and exhibits extremely excellent abrasion resistance even under high temperature. During calorizing process, a semi-enclosed container is filled with an article to be processed (jacket body 1) and an iron Al alloy powder having Al concentration of 20-60 wt.% or permeation agent produced by mixing 10-80 wt.% of Al powder and 0.1-2 et.% of alumina powder and held in a heating furnace of 600-1100°C for 5-20 hours while keeping nonoxidizing or reducing atmosphere.
