To provide chlorinated compound-free, water insoluble cutting/grinding oil compositions which can realize excellent cutting or grinding performance which is equal to that of a chlorinated cutting/grinding oil even in a small amount used and, in addition, enable mist-spraying with effectively suppressed scattering in the cutting or grinding processing of metallic materials, above all, hard-to-cut materials such as stainless steel.
Water insoluble cutting/grinding oil compositions comprise, in addition to a base oil, 0.5-15 wt.% methacrylate polymer composed of a homopolymer of a methacrylic ester represented by the formula: CH2=C(CH3) COOR (wherein R is an 8-18C alkyl group) or a copolymer of such a monomer with another copolymerizable halogen element-free monomer, 5-25 wt.% sulfur based extreme-pressure additive, and 2-15 wt.% calcium sulfonate or zinc sulfonate based compound and have a kinematic viscosity at 40°C of 50-100 mm2/sec.
