Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water jet peening method which allows an accurate check of the effects of improving residual stress on a WJP workpiece.SOLUTION: A high-pressure water stream is jetted from a scanning nozzle to apply impact waves generated when bubbles in the water stream are crushed, to the WJP workpiece (S5). Tensile residual stress near the surface of the WJP workpiece is improved into compressive residual stress. A pressure sensor detects the impact waves to find the occurrence frequency of the impact waves. The found occurrence frequency of the impact waves are determined to be greater or not than a set value (S7). When the occurrence frequency of the impact waves are greater than the set value, a high pressure pump is turned off to stop the jet of the water stream from the nozzle (S10). When the occurrence frequency of the impact waves is not greater than the set value, the operating conditions of the high pressure pump are changed (S8). The pressure of the water stream to be jetted from the nozzle is increased and WJP work is performed at a site where the occurrence frequency of the impact waves is not greater than the set value.
