Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a hardenable gypsum composition which forms a water- resistant gypsum product by hydration by mixing gypsum with an aqueous emulsion containing paraffin, hydrocarbons, montan wax and polyvinyl alcohol.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous emulsion is prepared by mixing (1) 100 weight parts of paraffine hydrocarbon with a melting point from 40 to 80°C, (2) about 1-200 weight parts of montan wax, (3) about 1-20 weight parts of polyvinyl alcohol with a saponification value of at least 90%, or preferably, from 97% to 100%, and 35-80 weight % water based on the said weight parts, and preferably, 0.1-5 weight % emulsifier comprising a nonionic surfactant or an anionic surfactant and 0.1-1 weight % stabilizing agent comprising alkali metal hydroxide or ammonium hydroxide. Then, the above-mentioned hardenable gypsum composition which forms a water-resistant gypsum product by hydration is prepared by mixing 0.5-20 weight parts of this aqueous emulsion in the solids with an aqueous slurry containing 100 weight parts of gypsum.
