To provide a water-soluble resin composition which has a high level of safety and can crosslink a vinyl alcohol/vinylamine copolymer with an easy operation, and to provide a gas barrier film and a wrapping material which has high gas barrier properties, is easy to produce, and has a high level of safety.

The water-soluble resin composition contains a crosslinking agent having a functional group which can react with a vinyl alcohol/vinylamine copolymer and an amino group. When an aqueous solution containing the water-soluble resin composition is so prepared as to be a 10 mass% aqueous solution of the copolymer, the viscosity of the composition, after being kept for 3 hours at 60°C, increases by 0.2 to 50 times as much as the viscosity immediately after the preparation. The gas barrier film and the wrapping material are obtained by coating the composition on a polymer resin base material and forming a film by heating and drying.
