To obtain the subject composition having a high liquid-binding ability and useful as a liquid-absorbing composition for sanitary articles such as diapers by polymerizing a hydrophilic monomer in the presence of a free-radical initiator capable of forming a specific number of free radical sites.
This composition is obtained by free radical-(co)polymerizing (B) one or more kinds of hydrophilic monomers of formula I [R1 is methyl, etc.; R2 is a group of formula II (R3 is H, etc.; R4 is amino, etc.; R5 is sulfonyl, etc.), etc.] (e.g. acrylic acid) in the presence of (A) starch and/or a chemically modified starch (e.g. carboxymethyl-starch). Therein, (C) a free radical initiator having three or more free-radical sits in the molecule (e.g. methacrylate/tertiary butyl peracrylate copolymer) is used.
