PURPOSE: To suppress waveform distortion by providing a selection means which receives the result of analysis from an analysis means analyzing a frequency characteristic of a specific part of an inputted television signal and selects a desired reference waveform among plural reference waveforms stored in a storage means based on the result of analysis to the equalizer.
CONSTITUTION: Ideal reference waveforms whose cut-off frequency differs are prepared in a waveform memory group 121 and a switch 117 selects a waveform memory (e.g., 119) storing a reference waveform having a band closest to a highest frequency in the waveform memory group 121 based on the result of detection of a highest frequency detection circuit 502. The output of the waveform memory selected in this way is subtracted from a difference of the difference output by a subtractor circuit 115 and only the waveform distortion is detected. A tap gain control circuit 106 controls each tap gain of a transversal filter 103 based on the result of detection and a composite video signal whose waveform distortion is suppressed is obtained at an output of the transversal filter 103 and the frequency is automatically corrected into an optimum frequency characteristic.
