Abstract:
PURPOSE:To lower the operating voltages of a quarter-wave plate element and a halfwave plate element by connecting these elements in parallel. CONSTITUTION:The quarter-wave plate element 101 and the halfwave plate element 102 are provided in parallel on a lithium niobate substrate 100. The propagation directions of the light thereof align nearly to the C-axis direction of the lithium niobate substrate 100. The quarter-wave plate element 101 and the halfwave plate element 102 are constructed by providing electrodes on the channel waveguide formed on the lithium niobate substrate and both sides thereof and have the same functions as the functions of the wavelength plates formed by using bulk optical crystals. The length allotted to the respective elements is made longer than in the case in which the quarter-wave plate element and the halfwave plate element are connected in series and, therefore, the operating voltages of the respective elements are lower.
