Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength converter which efficiency converts a wavelength, decreases the wavelength chirping of an output signal and is applicable to the signal exchange between the communication channels in WDM communication and a wavelength conversion method.
SOLUTION: Input light signal pulses are respectively inputted to a first nonlinear waveguide 24 and a second nonlinear waveguide 25 where refractive indicds change according to the input light signal pulses by imparting a time difference of 0.6 to 1.2 times the pulse width of the input light signal pulses and continuous light of a prescribed wavelength is inputted thereto, respectively. The phase of the optical signal outputted from the second nonlinear waveguide 26 is regulated to a prescribed quantity with respect to the phase of the optical signal outputted from the first nonlinear waveguide 24. Thereafter the optical signal outputted from the first nonlinear waveguide 14 and the optical signal outputted from the second nonlinear waveguide 25 are multiplexed. The wavelength-component of the input light signal pulses is removed from the multiplexed optical signal, by which the output light signal pulses of the wavelength different from the input light signal pulses are outputted.
