Abstract:

PURPOSE: To provide a wavelength multiplexing optical fiber employing a rare earth optical fiber in which the gain is increased in the amplification of signal light by suppressing the spontaneous emission in the optical fiber.

CONSTITUTION: Optical fibers, e.g. optical fiber type optical couplers 411 exhibiting periodic transmission characteristics for the variation of wavelength, are inserted between rare earth optical fibers 408, 409 and 409, 410 in order to match the wavelength of multiplexed signal light with that of the light transmitted through the optical fiber thus transmitting the signal light while attenuating the spontaneously emitted light.
