When a brake assembly 12 is operated, and a piston member 56 is moved between the first position and the second position, the thickness of a friction material 19 is gradually reduced. Each time the thickness of the friction material 19 is reduced, the piston member 56 is moved slightly to the right. When the piston member 56 is moved further to the right side, a pin member 80 is moved together with the piston member 56 to be positioned again in a bore 24. Then, a depth meter is inserted into the bore 24 to measure the distance between the head part 92 of an adjusting stem 90 and the outside surface 28 of the bore 24. In order to determine the wear of the friction material 19 adhesively bonded on a friction disc 18, simply by subtracting the second measured value from the first measured value measured when the head part of the pin member 80 is positioned at a specified position, the wear amount is established.
