PURPOSE: To obtain the whisker-contg. preform having a sufficient shape retaining property and strength in spite of a low whisker content and high void volume by constituting the preform of whiskers and inorg. binder and adjusting the preform to the specific void volume.
CONSTITUTION: This whisker-contg. preform contains the whiskers and the inorg. binder, has 65 to 92vol.% void volume and preferably has 8 to 35% volumetric rate of the whiskers. The preform has the excellent shape retaining property and the high strength and does not substantially collapse and crack at the time of impregnating metal therein. This preform is obtd. by adding fibrous gap materials into an aq. slurry contg. the whiskers (or the whiskers and inorg. fibers) and the inorg. binder and subjecting the slurry to dehydration molding, then drying the molding and calcining the molding at need.
