PURPOSE: To smooth winding and log separation by changing the distance between a winding drum and a movable winding roll according to the increasing diameter of a core which shall be slowly moved and cutting the core finally at perforations.

CONSTITUTION: A winding space A between a winding roll 4 and a winding drum 1 rotating at the same circumferential speed is increased and decreased intermittently and periodically by means of an eccentric mechanism 24, while, up- and-down motions of a press roll 15, movement of a receive roll 25, and operaion of nozzles 40, 41 are synchronized with the above periodic motion. One core 14 is supplied at each period successively into the winding space A. The core 14 rotates within the space A and starts winding motion of paper sheet 56 in aid of air jet from nozzles 40, 41. The core is gradually moved according to the increasing diameter. When the core comes to a position A2 as its diameter increases, the space A is narrowed and the next core 14 is received, while a receiving roll 25 descends to throw out the fully wound core 14 being cut at perforations. In this way, winding can be carried out smoothly.
