To provide a Sabonius type windmill with three vanes having an excellent starting property for starting its turn at low velocity desirable for a compact windmill to improve the starting property by optimizing a vane cross section shape.
In the vane cross section shape of the Sabonius type windmill with three vanes, a ratio of the length of a clearance 6 between the inside diameter end 7 of a vane and a supporting shaft 1 to the length of a reference line 10 connecting the center 5 of rotation with the outside diameter end 8 of the vane is 24%, an angle 9 formed of a line connecting the center 5 of rotation with the inside diameter end 7 of the vane and a line connecting the center 5 of rotation with the outside diameter end 8 of the vane is 120° in the positional relation of the inside diameter end 7 of the vane and the outside diameter end 8 of the vane, and a flow of a wind flowing to the wind receiving face of the vane on one side passes through the clearance and a larger quantity of a wind flows to the vane on the other side having low pressure with high efficiency when a distance of the clearance between the supporting shaft 1 and the inside diameter end 7 of the vane and the positional angle are decided in this way to raise pressure and obtain a strong rotational force, thereby improving the starting property.
