A window-type image pickup/display device is equipped with an image pickup/display panel which has a large number of image pickup elements and image display elements which are arranged in a uniform distribution through the surface of a plane board, where the image pickup elements detect at least the brightness and direction of incident light, and the image display elements project light whose brightness is proportional to that of the incident light in the direction in which it seems that the incident light travels rectilinearly from the display elements; an image interface circuit which generates image signals on the basis of image information received through the large number of image pickup elements arranged on the image pickup/display panel, and image information fed to a large number of display elements on the basis of image signals received through other image pickup/display panels elements; and a signal transmitting-receiving means which transmits signals sent from the image interface circuit to a transmission circuit, and sends image signals received from the transmission circuit to the image interface.
