PURPOSE: To provide a wire for a piston ring by powder metallurgy method particularly excellent in wear resistance and burning resistance and a manufacturing method therefor.
CONSTITUTION: This is a wire for a piston ring constituted of, by weight, 1.6 to 2.8% C, ≤2.0% Si, ≤2.0% Mn, 10.0 to 30.0% Cr and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities and having features that the grain size of carbides therein is regulated to ≤6μm and the total forging ratio to ≥10. In addition to the above alloy compsn., one or ≥ two kinds among V, Nb, Mo and W and, furthermore, one or ≥ two kinds of Co and Ni can independently or compositely be added. As for its manufacturing method, the powder of the alloy is formed into a compacted sintered body and is subjected to hot working and warm working into wire rod.
