To provide a work holding method and its vice device which can hold and fix a pipe material or a soft quality material liable to generate a plastic deformation when it is held and fixed strongly by a vice device, securely without giving a plastic deformation even though giving an elastic deformation.

When a work W is held by a standard vice jaw 5 and a movable vice jaw 7 provided to a vice head 3, the approachable position of the movable vice jaw 7 to the standard vice jaw 5 is preset to a position to make the interval size between the standard vice jaw 5 and the movable vice jaw 7 a little smaller than the width size of the work W, and the work W is held by moving the movable vice jaw 7 to the set position, in this work holding method. The vice device of this holding method is composed by providing a stopper member 27 which can regulate its movement freely by abutting to a butting part provided to the movable vice jaw 7, allowable to regulate its position.
