To remarkably reduce a thrust force working on between work rolls and backup rolls without supplying lubricant between the work rolls and the backup rolls, consequently, to miniaturize a thrust receiving device, and to remarkably reduce the wear of the rolls.
The work roll cross rolling mill is equipped with a work roll driving device 12 rotating and driving the work rolls 2, 3 and a backup roll driving device 14 rotating and driving the backup rolls 4, 5, and rolling is performed with a relative speed difference between the backup roll and the work roll. And, the work roll cross rolling mill is further equipped with a speed controller 16 giving a relative speed difference between the backup roll and the work roll. By this speed controller, a thrust force is calculated from an operation condition, and the relative speed difference is controlled so that the thrust force is within a proper range.
